Justin Hicks: worlds built from vulnerability
There is a quiet daring in the way Justin Hicks approaches a song. With a voice that wraps vulnerability in velvet and lyrics that hover between the personal and the mythic, Justin Hicks approaches a song with a quiet daring. With a voice that wraps vulnerability in velvet, Hicks doesn't just make music—he builds worlds: prismatic, genre-defying portraits of a Black man moving through an America that often misunderstands itself.
Raised in the American Midwest, Hicks carries the sound of open spaces - fields, back porches, church basements - into a soundscape where gospel meets art song and folk harmonies shift into avant-garde textures. Drawing on the storytelling traditions of Marvin Gaye, Roberta Flack, James Taylor, and Jeff Buckley, his approach still feels entirely his own. He brings his new album, Man Of Style, along with his remarkable trio.
Justin Hicks - vocals, piano, autoharp, Electronics; Marvin Sewell – guitar; Kyle Miles – bass & keys
