Jakub Zitko blends postmodern jazz, electronics, contemporary classical music, rock, alternative, and unconventional musical techniques and textures in his compositions. He works with sonically colorful layers, electronic sounds, and samples that organically shape the atmosphere of his pieces—or take on symbolic meaning within them. His melodies are atypical, and his harmonies are dense, often reaching beyond the usual boundaries of jazz. The music is rich with emotion—energy, melancholy, psychedelia, and, not least, humor. These qualities were already present in his compositions for the bands Muff and NUO. Now, these musical ingredients are being reimagined in a new instrumentation featuring wind instruments, promising original music—both composed and improvised—full of surprising twists in dynamics and form.
The main theme of the concert is the suite "Hyperboloid", which Jakub Zitko recently premiered in a symphonic version. Inspired by the shape of the geometric surface of the same name—dynamic, three-dimensional, and ever-changing—the suite mirrors three axes of human experience: place, time, and feeling. Eight interconnected yet contrasting movements create a landscape that is spatial, temporal, and existential. Jakub Zitko is also the author of lyrics that are raw, sparse, and open-ended, always tied to a sense of place (Sudety, Hyperboloid), inner emotions (My Other Self, Medea), or historical events (The Underground Railroad).
