Villa Winternitz
Na Cihlářce 10 , Praha 5
Club, Restaurant, Gallery
The architectural gem by the architects Adolf Loos and Karel Lhota was built in 1931-32
on a request of a Prague lawyer JUDr. Josef Winternitz for himself and his family: wife Jenny, daughter Suzana and son Peter. The family lived here until 1941, when they were forced to leave the villa under pressure and it was taken over by the emigration fund (Auswanderungsfond für Böhmen und Mähren). From this fund, the building was purchased by the Municipality of Prague, which first rented the villa to the sculptor Wilhelm Srb-Schlossbauer and later established a kindergarten there. Which was opened continuously until 1995.
In 1943, Winternitz's family went to Terezín and later Auschwitz. In the concentration camp, Josef Winternitz and his son Petr were murdered in a gas chamber. Jenny and Suzanne, who survived, tried to reclaim the villa after World War II.
Since 2017, the villa has been open to the public and can be visited as part of guided tours or thanks to the rich cultural program that takes place here regularly. It is also possible to stay in the villa or to rent it for a wedding or to organize a private party. The Winternitz villa is still in the hands of the descendants of the original owners, who, with a permanent exhibition on the second floor and educational activities, are trying to remind us about the eventful history of the 20th century, which was indelibly written into the history of the family and the building.
