Watch Dvořák's most beautiful opera at the Prague State Opera

The fruit of the collaboration between the two great creators, Antonín Dvořák and Jaroslav Kvapil, who were close as artists and friends alike, was a magical, dreamy story of the great, unfulfilled desire of the water nymph Rusalka, a work in which Dvořák’s musical genius reached its apex. The fairy-tale atmosphere inspired the composer to create singular, impressionistic music replete with melodic imagination and masterful instrumentation, a suggestive expression of the play of waves and the reflection of moonlight on the surface of a lake, as well as the overwhelming magic of a fairy-tale dream.

Since its premiere in 2005, the production of Rusalka directed by the distinguished Czech film-maker Zdeněk Troška, has been one of the most popular titles performed at the State Opera.

Prague State Opera is one of the most important music scenes in Europe & one of the stages of The National Theatre

Visit the recently re-opened and newly refurbished grand opera house with a noteworthy history where many world renown artists have worked here making each performance a prime cultural event.

History:

This Neo-classical edifice was built in 1883 by the German Theatre Association as a reaction of German minority in Prague to the opening of the Prague National Theatre. As the New German Theatre it soon gained international acclaim for its inovative repertoire and artistic leadership including such names as Angelo Neumann, Alexander Zemlinski or Georg Szell.

Nowadays, famous operas, as well as pieces unjustly overlooked or unknown in the Czech Republic are introduced in the State Opera gaining the theatre a reputation of one of the best European scenes where you can enjoy watching mainly opera and ballet performances.

First time going to an Opera in many years, and it was an incredible performance. The actors were really good, especially the water gnome, main Rusalka character, the witch and notably, I really loved the chef boys acting too. The actors expressions were very skilled and their singing was all beautiful. The Prince could sing too! And to perform in the state Opera, the hall was beautiful and added to the mystical feel of the performance. I love that it had English subtitles too because it helped me connect more deeply with the characters this way. Just a fantastic experience, highly recommend!

The production design, the singers, and the orchestra were all outstanding! The emotions and the fairy tale aspects of Rusalka were conveyed beautifully, and it was truly special to get to see a performance of this particular opera while visiting Prague.

The usher made us check my guests blazer and short jacket. These were in case the venue was chilly. The venue was quite warm - but these were not overcoats- they were laying over their knees. Patrons behind us brought in those cheap water bottles that crackled when you hold them. I don't think food or drink should be allowed in the theater. We thoroughly enjoyed the opera presented.

The production was tired and felt dated. Over use of old video projections, repetitive choreography. And weak ending with the leads upstage centre over the trap - ending on video projection. The venue made up for the lackluster show.
