John Cranko's Onegin: Pushkin's timeless love story based on Alexandre Pushkin's novel returns to the National Theatre
The Czech National Ballet has reincorporated into its repertoire Onegin, a true gem among narrative ballets, as choreographed by John Cranko, a major 20th-century dance figure and illustrious storyteller. The piece is another addition to the influential artist’s works that the company has performed in recent years (Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet).
Cranko’s Onegin requires from the dancers expressive acting, brilliant technique, and a profound sense for conveying the characters’ emotions and feelings. Alexander Pushkin’s novel in verse, Eugene Onegin, a classic of Russian literature, enjoys worldwide fame and popularity. It depicts the story of hapless love between Onegin, a St Petersburg dandy, and Tatyana, the bashful daughter of a landowner.
Cranko created his version for the Stuttgarter Ballett, which premiered in 1965, with Márcia Haydée and Ray Barra in the lead roles. Pushkin’s heroes first appeared on stage owing to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who based his 1878 opera Eugene Onegin on the novel. Cranko, however, set his ballet to a compilation of other Tchaikovsky pieces, arranged by Kurt-Heinz Stolze.
A treasure of the global ballet legacy, Cranko’s Onegin has been a staple of the repertoire of theatres all over the world. The production’s overall visual concept induces the atmosphere of Pushkin’s novel, with Elisabeth Dalton’s costumes amplifying the romantic hallmark.

The National Theatre is the most important and representative theatre of the Czech Republic
The Prague National Theatre was built from the desire of the Czech people for national independence. Its building was financed from the collections on which participated broad masses of people as well as important donators (including the nobility and the emperor himself). The theatre foundation ceremonial on 16th May 1868 became a national celebration.
The theatre was opened in 1881. In the same year the theatre burned down, and this tragic event caused a huge wave of new collections to support the restoration of the theatre. The Prague National Theatre was re-opened in 1883 by the opera Libuše by Bedřich Smetana and since then it has been serving as a place of Czech national identity and as a flagship of the Czech culture to these days.

My wife and I thought the performance was marvellous in every way. The dancing was first-rate; the sets were stunning; and the choreography was superbly fitted to the music. This is an exceptionally beautiful ballet! Why Titania ever fell in love with Onegin in the first place is a question, certainly, and one that doesn’t reflect very favourably on her character; but in this way I suppose we simply have to accept that the plot is somewhat dated, a thing of its time.
