Nabucco: Guiseppe Verdi’s one of the most celebrated works
In Italian, surtitles in Czech, English
Phenomenal chorus scenes, extremely impassioned virtuoso arias, as well as the perennially topical themes of expansive war, lust for power, betrayal, life and death, are the reasons why the Nabucco has always been a staple of opera houses’ repertoire.
The title hero is based on the historical figure of King Nebuchadnezzar II. The opera starts with a true event, the destruction of the Temple of Solomon in 587 BC. Yet the following conversion of Nabucco (Nebuchadnezzar) to Judaism and the setting the Hebrews free from captivity in Babylon are the librettist’s fictional creations, as are the complicated relationships within the royal family, and the strife between Nabucco’s two stepdaughters, striving to win the love of the same man and gain the throne.
Loosely blending true historical facts, a biblical legend and imagination, the libretto made it possible for Verdi to bring to bear fully for the first time his immense musical virtues. The colossal triumph of Nabucco, his third opera, at the world premiere at La Scala in Milan in 1842 opened for the 28-year-old composer the path to fame. The opera’s best-known number, the chorus “Va, pensiero, sull‘ali dorate” (“Fly, thought, on wings of gold”), expresses the Hebrew exiles’ hope for freedom.
In Verdi’s time, however, it became a symbol of the Italian patriots’ resistance to Austrian supremacy, an unofficial anthem of the endeavour for a unified Italy free from foreign control; and the chorus has retained its political meaning up to the present day. Just as Verdi’s librettist drew inspiration from the Bible, particularly Psalm 137, biblical symbolism is foregrounded by the stage director Tomáš Ondřej Pilař in his conception of Nabucco’s new State Opera production.

This venue is a jewel that must be seen to be believed. It is gorgeous, and the performance was no less satisfying. Without exception, the singers were excellent and did a good job on a difficult piece, particularly the soprano who sang Abigaille. The orchestra was a good partner for the singers, and the sound in general was overwhelmingly good and clear, very exciting. It is a confusing piece, at best, and unfortunately the direction did not make the plot any more clear or easy to understand, having updated events to about the 1930s and placed them in a framework of a museum, which seemed somewhat unnecessary and mysterious. But all on all, it was a glorious evening.

Nous avons beaucoup aimé cet opéra. C’était prodigieux. Un moment fort d'émotion renforcé par la date du 11 septembre et les costumes 1930 qui font de "Nabucco" un hymne contre la barbarie.

The interpretation of the opera was especially poignant, setting it in pre WW2 Europe with the invasion of the Nazis, as I attended the first night of Rosh Hashanah. The stark stylization lended itself to the theme. The performance was enhanced by the wonderful theater with superb acoustics.

The main artists from the opeta are the middle range. We expected more from the Stat Opera! The orchestra is one on the best we heard so far, until now.

I loved the performance. The orchestra was outstanding and the production was beautiful. I chose my seat online and it was not ideal. Some indication that it was restricted view would have been helpful. However, the evening was much enjoyed.

This is only my second opera so it was a little difficult to follow the story, especially without being able to fully see the subtitles. However, it was a beautiful performance!

A very fine performance and interesting take on Nabucco. Orchestra very high quality and chorus was particularly outstanding, but then Verdi gave them a lot of great material.

My wife and I loved the opera, Nabucco, here at the Prague State Opera on 24 April, 2024. The singers and the chorus were tremendous. My reason for not giving a 5 rating has everything to do with the confusion caused by the settings, and the extraneous and superfluous characters that were worked into all the scenes. Verdi wrote Nabucco to be set about 500 BC in Babylon and Jerusalem. The first act starts in a museum somewhere in Europe? in the 1950s. There are two bellhops walking around the stage, later we see two young girls, I assume they represent Abigaille and Fenena as children. Then later we are introduced to five flying monkeys. I was thinking the opera should be retitled "Nabucco meets the Wizard of Oz" I was searching for a program in the hope that I would see some hidden meaning the additions. At the end of Act III, the chorus took a time machine and found themselves back in Babylon, circa 500 BC, to sing Va Pensiero.

Music and singing was excellent. We felt that the staging was a little strange and quite austere. We are not opera buffs though!
