Mozart and Prague:
Mozart had a truly exceptional bond with Prague, one that shaped some of his greatest music. He visited the city five times, beginning in January 1787, when he conducted his opera The Marriage of Figaro. While Vienna had greeted the work coolly, Prague fell in love with it; its melodies rang out across the streets, prompting Mozart's famous remark: "My Praguers understand me." That same visit saw the premiere of his Prague Symphony. Buoyed by this reception, Mozart accepted a new commission for the city — Don Giovanni. It premiered on 29 October 1787 at the Nostic Theatre (today's Estates Theatre), with Mozart himself conducting, to another triumphant reception.
His ties to Prague deepened further in 1791, when he composed La clemenza di Tito for the coronation of Emperor Leopold II as King of Bohemia. Beyond professional acclaim, Prague gave Mozart personal warmth and inspiration through close friends František Xaver Dušek and his wife, singer Josefína Dušková, whom he often visited at their villa in Bertramka — now part of the Smíchov district.
