Semyon Bychkov conducts Czech Philharmonic: Glanert & Rachmaninoff at Dvořák Hall
Detlev Glanert sees the composer as a medium through whom the world passes, one who should ultimately disappear behind the work, making space for a shared experience between audience and performers. Semyon Bychkov, a longtime friend, has been a dedicated advocate for Glanert's music, conducting the premiere of his Prague Symphony at the Rudolfinum in 2022. Glanert in turn praises the Czech Philharmonic warmly, noting that the orchestra doesn't merely play new music accurately but brings out its very soul. Bychkov's lifelong passion for Rachmaninoff dates back to his childhood, surviving the scepticism of fellow students at the Leningrad Conservatory who assured him he would eventually grow out of it. Among his favourites is the Second Symphony, which he admires for its extraordinary orchestration and the fearless, uncompromising voice of a young composer who knew exactly what he wanted.
