Voices from Cyprus: Byzantine and Western Music of the Middle Ages
The concert presents previously unknown Byzantine compositions from the archives of Cypriot monasteries, as well as Czech premieres of polyphonic Western motets from the Ars nova and Ars subtilior periods—drawn, among others, from the Turin Codex J. II. 9. The programme brings together works from two distinct musical traditions that historically coexisted in medieval Cyprus, often in churches located only a few dozen metres apart.
Program:
- Byzantine music, Gregorian chant, Ars Nova and Ars Subtilior
Performing:
Schola Gregoriana Pragensis
David Eben - artistic director
Philokallia Ensemble
Marios Christou - artistic director
Giorgos Demetriou - psaltis
The concert is held on the occasion of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union under the auspices of Ota Klempíř, Minister of Culture of the Czech Republic, Vasiliki Kassianidou, Minister of Culture of the Republic of Cyprus, and H.E. Aliki Pascali, Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus.
Important:
- No intermission
