Succumb to the wit of Figaro on the stage of Prague National Theatre
In Italian, subtitles in Czech, English
Figaro is the most famous barber of all time, and his wit, as sharp as his razor, helps Count Almaviva to win his beloved Rosina. Love, guile and intrigue, these are the ingredients of Rossini’s superlative comic opera.
The sparkling charm of the music, the virtuoso parts of the heroes as well as the rapid tempo of the action, have secured Il barbiere di Siviglia a permanent position in the global repertoire.
The author of the comedy Le Barbier de Seville, on which the libretto is based, the celebrated French playwright Pierre Beaumarchais, wrote that he above all wanted “to succumb to his merry temper and return the original joyful mood to theatre”. Rossini’s opera directly links up to this intention.

The National Theatre is the most important and representative theatre of the Czech Republic
The Prague National Theatre was built from the desire of the Czech people for national independence. Its building was financed from the collections on which participated broad masses of people as well as important donators (including the nobility and the emperor himself). The theatre foundation ceremonial on 16th May 1868 became a national celebration.
The theatre was opened in 1881. In the same year the theatre burned down, and this tragic event caused a huge wave of new collections to support the restoration of the theatre. The Prague National Theatre was re-opened in 1883 by the opera Libuše by Bedřich Smetana and since then it has been serving as a place of Czech national identity and as a flagship of the Czech culture to these days.

Regret que les musiciens soient encore dans la fosse alors qu'en France dans certaines salles, ils sont placés devant la scène surélevée mais en vue du public. Très bon moment passé. Chanteurs de qualité.

Seeing The Barber of Seville is a must for everyone who likes culture, but I was disappointed in the mise-en-scène of the opera, especially the fact the opera was taking place in another century/decade. The costumes were not from the 17th century. The singing and acting were good, and some parts definitely made me laugh. The fact we had seen Don Giovanni at the Estate Theatre the night before probably affected our opinion of this opera, since nothing can quite compare to that experience.

Excellent performance, would recommend. Full of humour.
Mahitap Tokpunar | May 11, 2023 | 19:00 (Thu)
The performances were good, but the script was quite ordinary. We expected something more interesting.
