The gardens around and inside the Prague Castle area are well hidden from the crowds yet they are such a gem! For those who seek a few moments of epace for themselves, visiting the gardens is a must.
The three South Gardens (Paradise Garden, Rampart Garden and Hartig Garden) were established continuously on the location of bulwarks beneath Prague Castle.
During the last renovation in 2012 the appearance of the gardens was restored into the original state from 1920's when they were renovated by the Slovenian architect Josip Plečnik for the first Czechoslovak president T. G. Masaryk.
Royal Garden
Located on the side of old medieval vineyards, the garden of Renaissance origins was founded in the 16th century and has become one of the few places in the Prague centre where you can sit and contemplate in quiet. The garden later became well known for its rare botanical specimens and the exotic plants brought over from faraway countries.
Number of buildings which served the entertainment were situated there: the Ball Game Hall, the Royal Summer Palace, the Lion Court. The elements if Renaissance character as well as Baroque elements can be found there.
Wallenstein Garden
The early Baroque garden was created in parallel with the construction of the Wallenstein Palace during 17th century. A Bohemian military leader, Count Wallenstein, let some of the medieval buildings of Prague to be damaged in order to build the garden. You will still find the gardens walled off from the city.
Many of the statues you will see are copies of the original ones created by the famous Dutch artist Adrian De Vries. Part of the monumental Wallenstein Palace nowadays serves as the Senate of the Czech Republic. In summer the garden is also used as the venue for concerts and theatrical performances.
