Besides housing extensive library collections, the Municipal Library is also a lively cultural centre. The Municipal Library (the main building on Mariánské Square) was built in 1928, becoming the first purpose-built library in Czechoslovakia and one of the most modern libraries in Europe. Nowadays, it is one of the cultural centres of Old Town with a rich program including film screenings, art exhibitions, discussions, concerts and literary evenings.
