Tucked beside the leafy Thomayer Gardens in Prague 8, Libeň Chateau (Libeňský zámek) is one of the city's most charming yet overlooked historic landmarks. Built on the foundations of a Gothic fortress, it was reshaped into a Renaissance chateau and, in 1769–1770, given the graceful Rococo façade that still charms visitors today. In June 1608, its walls witnessed a turning point in Central European history: the Treaty of Libeň, a peace agreement between Emperor Rudolf II and his brother Matthias.
For almost two centuries afterwards, the chateau served as the summer residence of Prague's Old Town mayors and welcomed distinguished guests, including Empress Maria Theresa. Today it houses the Prague 8 district office and one of Prague's most sought-after wedding venues. It is a rare place where couples can hold both a civil ceremony in the ornate grand hall and a church wedding in the chapel of the Immaculate Conception, adorned with frescoes by Ignác Raab.
