Following the announcement of Dracula's final performance on June 14, 2026, the Karlín Music Theatre has decided to take a bold step: to infuse the most famous Czech vampire with “new, revitalized blood.” The fall season will thus feature Dracula, among other things, in state-of-the-art lighting, with perfect immersive sound, and in dynamic choreography that builds on the legendary legacy of Richard Hes.

“When Dracula was first created, the possibilities of technology were in their infancy compared to today. Today, we can take the set design to a level we couldn’t even dream of in 1995,” says producer and director of the Karlín Music Theatre Egon Kulhánek, who was there at the birth of the original version. “But don’t expect a rejection of our roots. The cornerstones—the immortal music of Karel Svoboda, the lyrics by Zdeněk Borovec, and the libretto by Richard Hes—remain untouched. However, we are seeking a new generation of performers who will give these iconic roles a modern face.”

The Karlín Music Theatre is one of the oldest and most beautiful theatres in Prague

The Neo-Baroque building, completed in 1881, was originally furnished with tables and initially served for circus and, later on, vaudeville performances and cabaret shows. In the 1920s, the building hosted performances given by various theatre companies and operetta performances.

Throughout its history, the Karlín Theatre employed some of the most distinguished Czech artists. During the time of the Nazi occupation, the building was the venue for performances of the then-closed National Theatre, under the name Provisional Theatre.

After the World War II, in 1945, the director E. F. Burian launched in Karlín the regular operation of the repertoire musical theatre. In 1950, the theatre came under the administration of the City of Prague, and in 1954 became the property of the state and was given a new name: the State Theatre in Karlín. In 1961, it was returned to the City of Prague as the Karlin Music Theatre, and has remained so until the present day.

We purchased tickets months ago for the performance of Dracula. We enjoyed the show so much- the story was updated to 2026, the sets were so interesting and the actors were fantastic. Please be aware that if you sit in the first balcony (where we did) that the stage lights block half of the English subtitles. Also, the first balcony seats have much less leg room than the orchestra seats. I hope we will return to Prague someday and enjoy a show at The Karlin Music Theatre from Orchestra seats.
