La traviata

What a pleasant surprise to have the opportunity to buy last-minute ticket for La Traviata at the State opera in Prague. The building has great history, the cast and the ensemble was absolutely high-quality. I’m very excited I was able to go.

The acoustics were top notch with sensible balanced music and singing voices so you could really enjoy the songs. In particular, it was a pleasure to hear Zuzana Markova sing Violetta, Alejandro Del Angel sing Alfredeo and not least Svatopluk Sem as Giorgio. The only thing that could be better was the scenography itself, which was extremely spartan. But all in all a nice experience.

Good performance of "La Traviata". But the stage can be organized better.

The production and singing were excellent and we really enjoyed La Traviata. The dressing of everyone in either black or white was dramatic but a bit of colour does entertain the eye!

We had a wonderful evening at the Prague State Opera. The performance on stage was magnificent, in a modern, spare and very interesting stage setting which left plenty of room for the stars to act their parts. The orchestra and direction were outstanding.

This was our second visit to Prague and on both visits we attended an opera at the Prague State Opera. Every aspect of the performance of La Traviata was captivating! Booking online was convenient and easy and although the house sold out we were still able to obtain seats a few days before the performance. The tickets are inexpensive and within anyone's budget, the acoustics are wonderful, and the venue is small giving the entire house an intimate musical experience. We would never miss the experience if we were in Prague and would attend whatever was being performed!

We loved our night at the opera! The performance of La Traviata was first-rate and the opera house itself is gorgeous. Many of the spectators were formally dressed, adding to the elegant atmosphere. As a group of five, we had our own box with an excellent view of both the stage and the orchestra. Don't miss it!

The Opera / performers was outstanding. We couldn’t be more happy.

On the whole this was a very good production. We particularly liked the young Italian tenor in the role of Alfredo. Some bits I didn’t get: why were all the guests in the opening party scene dressed in black and only Violetta wearing white? Why were the gypsy dancers in the later party scene substituted for ‘ladies of the night’ wearing skimpy, very revealing outfits? In the last scene Violetta is usually depicted dying in bed but we see her sleeping on the floor, with the only other piece of furniture being a chair. Small changes but they didn’t add anything, so why?

This was an excellent production, a minimalist more modern setting, but very well done. Beautiful singing by all the main voices. A highlight of my visit here in Prague!

Excellent edition, particularly the quality of the singers. Relatively austere production, which seems to be the way opera is presented nowadays. Overall a very good night at the opera and money well spent.

Pleasure to listen and watch . Such amazing voices! Beautiful yet minimal choreography keeps your focus on the story and the art of opera. Lovely.

A wonderful experience. The State Opera is a beautiful building to visit and the music was sublime. Both Orchestra and Singers gave fabulous performances and I especially admired the voice of Yaritza Veliz. My only disappointment was, as a collector of theatre and opera programmes, I couldn't find one! Thank you for such a memorable evening.

Our first ever opera and it was fantastic. The theatre is stunning and the translations into English a real bonus

the actors were amazing. very clear voices and unique performance. The stage design was also special and provided a good expression for various scenes.

The performance was wonderful, filled with emotion and drama. It was perfect.

The intimacy of the theatre enables the singers to reach the audience with great emotion and clarity of voice. The performers were superb in their roles. The orchestra was excellent as well. As a North American I find the applause hard on the hands.

This is my favourite opera and I have seen it many times, but I was very disappointed with this production. Among many aspects I didn't like: the first act was very drab considering it was a party; very little was made of the Spanish dancers in the second part of Act 2; we could not hear Violetta reading the letter in the final act as she disappeared behind a screen and her voice couldn't be heard; I cannot understand why the poor girl who was dying couldn't have a bed and had to throw herself on the floor. It was a real pity that the technology for the English translation didn't work. I took my daughter to see this opera for her first time, and it would have made a huge difference for her enjoyment if the technology had worked.

Un grand moment passé avec de très belles voix et une très bonne mise en scène. Juste un petit regret sur des décors très simplistes.

2h45 de pure magie dans un décor féérique... Je recommande sans hésitation.
