Maxim Vengerov, often hailed as the greatest living string player of our time, returns to Prague
The acclaimed soloist and conductor and Grammy Award winner, whose name resonates on the world’s most prestigious stages, will perform on 26th April in the Smetana Hall, Municipal House, at a special concert with the Prague Philharmonia under the baton of Emmanuel Villaume. Maxim Vengerov performs on the ex-Kreutzer Stradivarius (1727).
The evening’s program features a journey through three musical landscapes, in a journey from joyous energy to quiet contemplation.
The concert opens with Felix Mendelssohn’s ‘Italian‘ Symphony, a joyful, sunlit work in which the orchestra will shine with the precision, clarity and vitality for which it is so renowned. Next comes Alexey Shor’s Violin Concerto No. 6 – ‘Carpe Diem‘ – a contemporary piece built on clarity of line, a radiant lyricism and a subtle virtuosity. Maxim Vengerov lends it an inner strength and a luminous tone in a performancecombining brilliant technique with profound emotion. The emotional core of the evening will be Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto – a deeply personal musical confession. In Vengerov’s hands, the work becomes a statement of sincerity and expressive intensity. His interpretation balances inner fire with natural eloquence. The music unfolds from within – sincere, noble and heartfelt.
Program:
- Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy | Symphony No. 4 in A major, Op. 90 – the ‘Italian‘
- Alexey Shor | Violin Concerto No. 6 – ‘Carpe Diem‘
- Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky | Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35

Emmanuel Villaume - conductor
The Prague Philharmonia was founded in 1994 on the initiative of the conductor Jiří Bělohlávek (1946-2017) under the original name Prague Chamber Philharmonia. Since the 2015–16 season the orchestra has been led by the French conductor Emmanuel Villaume. Today it is one of the most recognised orchestras, not only among Czech but also world ensembles. Regular invitations to tour abroad as well as recording projects with the most renowned international labels bear testimony to this.
