The eldest son of J. S. Bach, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach wrote the oldest liturgical composition, Magnificat. Hear it in Rudolfinum.
The work was composed in 1749 and Carl Philipp Emanuel, with this setting of the Marian hymn, applied for the position of cantor of Leipzig as his father’s successor. Here Bach the son presents his counterpoint mastery in an impressive way as a tribute to the art of his father, while at the same time presenting the listener with the revolutionary style of „Emfindsamkeit“, which presents the new aesthetic ideals of his generation.
