His voice on the instrument is very much his own, but his style still bears the unmistakable imprint of one of his greatest influences and mentors, Freddie Hubbard. Rotondi came to prominence working as a sideman for such musical legends as Ray Charles, Lionel Hampton, George Coleman, and Lou Donaldson, and cemented his reputation by appearing regularly with his own groups in New York’s many renowned jazz clubs, as well as recording prolifically as both a leader and sideman on Criss Cross Records, Delmark, Milestone, High Note, Sharp Nine, Cellar Live, and Smoke Sessions Records.
Evidence of Rotondi’s regard among musicians is clear when one considers the stellar list of sidemen that appear on his albums, artists such as Chris Potter, Larry Goldings, Billy Drummond, Harold Mabern, Mulgrew Miller, Peter Bernstein, Bill Stewart, Eric Alexander, and Joe Locke to name but a few.
