Oskara combines two different artistic worlds of two dance companies

Dance performance with English and Czech surtitles

Oskara is an installation work that reviews some aspects of Basque culture, myths, from their origins to the present time, describing a plastic and emotional path of symbols and iconography with an ambiguous and disconcerting force which, in the most absolute way, contains within it the history of human experience. The dramatic code points towards a performance structured by an accentuated, almost violent, language of abstraction, where only the order of the arrangements can provide certain sensory logic.

For Oskara, La Veronal continues with its investigations into the power of the image through the opposition of the images themselves in a labyrinthine plot that creates in the audience an attractive experience of missteps and discoveries through the explosive combination of dance, text and image, and where each individual will find their own representation.

Marcos Morau / La Veronal / Kukai Dantza

Marcos Morau is one of today’s most prominent choreographers. He received the National Dance Award 2013 in Spain, and is currently working for the most prestigious dance companies, as well as on creations of his own such as the La Veronal company. This company is creating a series of works that take as a starting point a country or city in the world, creating an analogy between dance and geography. Kukai Dantza Company, National Dance Award 2017 in Spain, is considered to be a reference point in present-day culture in the Basque Country. Its director and choreographer, Jon Maya, has managed to create an original new style, which is recognisable on the international scene. The company comprises dantzaris who have been dancing since the age of 6 and have been together in the company since the age of 16. They have together evolved towards new ways of understanding performing arts in tune with modern times.

The Instituto Cervantes, within its Baila España programme, collaborates in the presentation of the dance show Oskara by Kukai Dantza at the Prague Crossroads Festival of the National Theatre in Prague, within the Programme for the Internationalisation of Spanish Music and Performing Arts 2023, co-organised by Instituto Cervantes and INAEM (Spanish Ministry of Culture and Sport), within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan – financed by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.

Laterna magika - The New Stage of National Theatre, a world famous nonverbal multimedia theatre in Prague

Legendary project of Laterna magika is a Czech-unique, a show combining elements of film and live acting performances.

Classical principles of non-verbal theatre mingle with dance, film images and black light theatre. The audience is drawn into the story by a panoramically projected image, and fantastic scenes surpass the boundaries between fantasy and reality.

Enjoy the journey to the fantastic world of the Laterna magika, a synthesis of pantomime, dance, music, film and black light theatre.

The building of the New Stage of National Theatre, built in 1983, was tailored to the specific requirements of Laterna magika performances. The unconventional edifice, covered by over four thousand pieces of glass tiles, was designed by Karel Prager.

The diversely shaped glass tiles, created by Stanislav Libenský, form a distinctive relief which gives the New Stage its characteristic appearance. This unique use of glass makes the whole building an original sculptural work of art.
