Leos Janacek´s opera From the House of the Dead is based on famous Dostoyevsky´s novel.

Following Haba’s The New Land and Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov, the loose “Russian trilogy” we have prepared for the 2014/15 season is rounded off by Leos Janacek’s final opera, inspired by Dostoyevsky’s novel The House of the Dead.

Dostoyevsky´s novel reflects the author’s own experience as a political prisoner in a Siberian penal camp amid a wide scale of convicts condemned for various crimes.

In the opera, Janacek put aside the repeatedly treated stories of great female dramatis personae and immersed himself in the world of male “crime and punishment”. The metaphor of “the dead house” gives rise to the composer’s peculiar, anti-dramatic conception of the opera. Even though the life in the camp is depicted lushly and extremely realistically, it all serves as mere coulisse, an ever-repeating and depressing rite, a pretended life. The prisoners actually perceive as real life their past, into which they obsessively return, some of them telling shocking stories so as to make sure they are still alive.

The National Theatre is a symbol of the Czech cultural history. In the National Theatre you can see top opera and ballet performances.

The National Theatre is a symbol of the Czech cultural history and the most important and representative theatre of the Czech Republic.

In The National Theatre you can see top opera and ballet performances.

The National Theatre was built from the desire of the Czech people for national independence. Its building was financed from the collections on which participated broad masses of the people as well as important donators (including the nobility and the emperor himself). The theatre foundation ceremonial on 16th May 1868 became a national celebration.

The National Theatre is the prime stage in the Czech Republic, where you will find the highest artistic quality.

The theatre was opened in 1881. In the same year the theatre burned down, and this tragic event caused a huge wave of new collections to support the restoration of the theatre. The National Theatre was reopened in 1883 by the opera Libuse by Bedrich Smetana and since then it has been serving as a place of Czech national identity and as a flagship of the Czech culture to these days.
