Woman in the world. The world within the woman: two half-hour operas in one performance
Two different faces of modern European opera, and two different music and theatre universes will be presented at the State Opera in this performance consisting of opera one-act plays by Arnold Schönberg and Kurt Weill, remarkable innovators of 20th century music.
The common theme of Schönberg's Erwartung and Weill's Die sieben Todsünden could be described as "the woman (and the world)." In both approximately half-hour operas, however, the theme is grasped completely differently.
In his satirical miniature Weill shows “the woman in the world”, raising the question: what must a woman do so that her narrow-minded family consider her “virtuous”, that is, economically successful. In Schönberg’s monodrama Erwartung, Weill’s female theme is turned inside out, providing a view of “the world within the woman”. The opera takes the form of a monologue for the single character simply called Woman, expressing a plethora of contradictory emotions resulting from the loss of her lover.
The supremely feminine theme of both operas is theatrically directed by the Czech director Barbora Horáková Joly, who works mainly in Western Europe, where she has also won several prestigious awards. She first appeared at the State Opera in early 2021 with her directorial interpretation of Verdi's Rigoletto. Jiří Rožeň, one of the greatest talents of the young Czech conductor generation, has music production in his hands.
