Giuseppe Verdi´s La Traviata is one of the most famous operas

Italian original version with Czech and English surtitles

Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata is based on Alexandre Dumas’s novel La Dame aux camelias, about the famous courtesan and idol of Parisian society in the 1840s. It is in fact the very first significant opera to a contemporary social theme. La Traviata is currently one of the most popular Prague Opera titles and has been performed to great acclaim abroad too (including Japan, 2007).

In Prague (in the opera house, today´s State Opera), the opera has been staged since the very beginning of its existence, when it took over the production from the German Estates Theatre. The opera primarily afforded the opportunity to host celebrated foreign singers, including the legendary Australian soprano Nellie Melby (18 April 1900).

The most recent production was undertaken in 2006 by a foreign team headed by the French stage director Arnaud Bernard, with the music being explored by the Italian conductor Enrico Dovico.

Our experience:

We saw the opera in October 2022 and we were thrilled. Perfect performance of Peter Berger and Jana Sibera as Alfredo and Violetta (note there are alternations). Couldn´t fault it. The orchestra was superb as well as the stage setting (very simple which allowed us to fully concentrate on the performances). Standing ovation in the end was well deserved.

History:

This Neo-classical edifice was built in 1883 by the German Theatre Association as a reaction of German minority in Prague to the opening of the Prague National Theatre.

As the New German Theatre it soon gained international acclaim for its inovative repertoire and artistic leadership including such names as Angelo Neumann, Alexander Zemlinski or Georg Szell.

Nowadays, famous operas, as well as pieces unjustly overlooked or unknown in the Czech Republic are introduced in the State Opera gaining the theatre a reputation of one of the best European scenes where you can enjoy watching mainly opera and ballet performances.

There is a screen with subtitles on each seat.

Our first ever opera and it was fantastic. The theatre is stunning and the translations into English a real bonus

the actors were amazing. very clear voices and unique performance. The stage design was also special and provided a good expression for various scenes.

The intimacy of the theatre enables the singers to reach the audience with great emotion and clarity of voice. The performers were superb in their roles. The orchestra was excellent as well. As a North American I find the applause hard on the hands.

This is my favourite opera and I have seen it many times, but I was very disappointed with this production. Among many aspects I didn't like: the first act was very drab considering it was a party; very little was made of the Spanish dancers in the second part of Act 2; we could not hear Violetta reading the letter in the final act as she disappeared behind a screen and her voice couldn't be heard; I cannot understand why the poor girl who was dying couldn't have a bed and had to throw herself on the floor. It was a real pity that the technology for the English translation didn't work. I took my daughter to see this opera for her first time, and it would have made a huge difference for her enjoyment if the technology had worked.
