The Bartered Bride

Show image detail
The National Theatre

Bedrich Smetana’s Bartered Bride is the founding work of modern Czech opera!

The opera is staged in the Czech original version and English and German surtitles are used in the performance.

The opera Bartered Bride soon exceeded the domestic framework and became a permanent part of the world’s operatic repertoire.

The Bartered Bride’s grotesque yet highly moving story is grasped with tenderness, intelligent wit and hyperbole,

as well as an understanding for the long-gone order (disorder) of human lives in the Czech village. The production’s forcibility is enhanced by Zuzana Pridaova’s costumes, inspired by plant and animal motifs, and Ladislava Kosikova’s stylish choreography charged with energy and replete with naturalness.

The National Theatre is a symbol of the Czech cultural history and the most important and representative theatre of the Czech Republic.

In The National Theatre you can see top opera and ballet performances.

The National Theatre was built from the desire of the Czech people for national independence. Its building was financed from the collections on which participated broad masses of the people as well as important donators (including the nobility and the emperor himself). The theatre foundation ceremonial on 16th May 1868 became a national celebration.

The National Theatre is the prime stage in the Czech Republic, where you will find the highest artistic quality.

The theatre was opened in 1881. In the same year the theatre burned down, and this tragic event caused a huge wave of new collections to support the restoration of the theatre. The National Theatre was reopened in 1883 by the opera Libuse by Bedrich Smetana and since then it has been serving as a place of Czech national identity and as a flagship of the Czech culture to these days.
