Die Fledermaus (The Bat)

Show image detail
Karlín Music Theatre

Die Fledermaus (The Bat) by J. Strauss belongs to the most celebrated operettas.

The opereta is staged in German original version and Czech and English surtitles are used in the performance.

Johann Strauss II was primarily known for his sublime waltzes, chiefly An der schönen blauen Donau and from 1871 for his operettas too. Following two successful titles (Indigo und die vierzig Räuber, and Der Karneval in Rom), in 1874 he composed the operetta Die Fledermaus (The Bat), which alongside Der Zigeunerbaron (The Gipsy Baron, 1885) is the most celebrated operetta there is.
The source for Die Fledermaus was Henri Meilhac and Ludevic Halévy’s French vaudeville play La réveillon, dating from 1872. The libretto was written by Karl Haffner and Richard Genée.

The premiere took place at the Theater an der Wien on 5 April 1874 with Strauss himself conducting.

A winning mixture of Viennese charm, humour and invincible joie de vivre are the virtues of the operetta that has established a firm position on stages worldwide,

including opera houses, owing in large part to Gustav Mahler in 1894 in Hamburg and shortly afterwards also at the Hofoper in Vienna, to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Strauss’s artistic activities.

Die Fledermaus is a cornerstone of every large opera house’s repertoire.

The historic musical theatre of 1881, in which the State Opera performs during the reconstruction of the State Opera building.

The Karlín Music Theatre is one of the oldest and most beautiful theatres in Prague.

In beautiful Karlin Music Theare, the National Theatre is performing some of its opera and ballet productions during the time of the reconstruction of the State Opera building.

The Neo-Baroque building, completed in 1881, was originally furnished with tables and initially served for circus and, later on, vaudeville performances and cabaret shows. In the 1920s, the building hosted performances given by various theatre companies and operetta performances.

During its history, the Karlin Theatre employed some of the most distinguished Czech artists.

During the time of the Nazi occupation, the building was the venue for performances of then closed National Theatre, under the name Provisional Theatre.
After the World War II, in 1945, the director E. F. Burian launched in Karlin the regular operation of the repertoire musical theatre. In 1950, the theatre came under the administration of the City of Prague, and in 1954 became the property of the state and was given a new name: the State Theatre in Karlín. In 1961, it was returned to the City of Prague as the Karlín Music Theatre, and has remained so until the present day.
Theatre is a cultural institution. Please respect the common principles of appropriate behaviour and clothing.
